Since the first day I came to America, I had a very difficult time with the English language. I wasn't as smart as the other kids and it took me quite some time to catch up with everyone. As I progressed through school, I learned a lot of new things. I had such a desire to learn. Growing up, I had to teach myself a lot of things because my grandparents didn't know any English. The challenge that I was faced with motivated me to succeed in life.
As I grew older, I became more mature and developed as a very hardworking individual. Not only did I want to excel in my academics, but in everything else that I put my heart into. I remember one time how I experienced a setback that made me very sad for a while. However, I was able to learn from it and continue on with life because I believe that there is no point in faltering over your failure. If at first you don't succeed, try, try... again they say. Just get right back up and be motivated and inspired by that lost and I was able to do just that.
The personal setback that has made me stronger was an experience I had during my junior year in high school. I've played tennis since my freshmen year but never excelled as much as I did until the height of my junior year. I was at #2 doubles for Varsity tennis and had won for #2 Doubles City Championships. I won at Regionals and advanced up to State. This was a very prestigious coming for me.
State was what I worked all year for. To be competing with top rank girls all over Colorado gave me much pride. The first round, my partner and I did so well. Then after a break, we were down by so much. At that moment, my mind was going in all kinds of directions. I didn't know what to think. I would never forget this day because my partner and I had lost after a third set. I felt so sad, but most of all disappointed. Words could not describe the emotions I was going through.
