The Catcher in the Rye

             The Catcher in the Rye is a story told by a boy named Holden. He tells the story from a hospital where he is receiving treatment. He reflects on the previous events that occurred in his life that brought him to the point of hospitalization. Holden rejects the idea of adulthood. He expresses this idea through the glorification of the innocence of children. He talks a lot about his sister Phoebe and his late brother Allie. Holden believes that adults are phonies who corrupt children. Holden's fear of adult hood brings on his mental illness that puts him in the hospital.
             Early in the story Holden introduces his late bother Allie. The readers learn about Allie when Stradlater asks Holden to write a descriptive essay for him. Holden chooses to write about Allie's catcher's mitt. Holden idolized his younger brother. He described Allie as being perfect. Allie was intelligent and loved by everyone. Allie died at a young age form leukemia. Holden discussed how after Allie's death he had a hard time dealing with it. He broke out all of the windows in the garage and had to go to the hospital. When ever Holden had a hard time in the story he always called out to brother for help. Allie represents the innocence that children have.
             Holden also mentions his sister Phoebe. Phoebe is one of the only people in the story that makes Holden happy. In the beginning Phoebe contributes to Holden's idea that all
             children are innocent and completely separate from "phony" adults. Holden talks about how she's intelligent and a good dancer. Phoebe is the only person in the novel that Holden looks forward to opening up to. When the readers actually meet Phoebe she doesn't truly align with Holden's theory about children. Phoebe is very mature and realizes that Holden is trying to avoid adulthood. She knows that everyone has to grow up and wants her brother to realize that. Holden
