"A Rose For Emily" by William Faulkner and The Glass Menager

             "A Rose For Emily" is a short story written by William Faulkner, which describes how the protagonist Emily Grierson personality is developed by the contribution of various characters in the story. Laura Wingfifld, the central character of The Glass Menagerie by Tenseness Williams whose personality is also shaped by the actions of the other character in the story. Miss Emily is a victim of circumstances which she later on faces in life through her decisions. In Laura's case, she suffers from decisions that are made for her by her mother and brother. Because of Emily and Laura's environment and also the people around them, their personalities have many similarities and differences; both Emily and Laura are anti social, but for different reasons. After witnessing many tragedies, it drove Miss Emily to her insanity. Also because of her family status Emily shows arrogance. Unlike Miss Emily, Laura illustrates humility and is incredibly shy, which makes her isolated from the real world and seem "peculiar" to the outside.
             Miss Emily displays anti social behavior mainly because of her over protective father. Miss Emily's father caged her inside the same house with the same butler. Emily's father would scare off any man who became interested in her. "None of the man were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such...miss Emily a slender figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip... so when she got to be thirty and still single" (Faulkner 624). She was sheltered by her father, which made her dependent on him for everything, so when he died the only thing left was her house.
