The combination of a small amount of voter reception and the plurality system, where-in winner-takes-all, ensure that the third party will never win a major election, such as the presidential race. However, this does not mean the third party has no influence within the election. In some elections, the third party receives enough votes, votes that would usually be cast for Democrats or Republicans, to alter the outcome of the election.
