Scout the Intelligent Tomboy

             Jean Louise "Scout" Finch is the main character and the narrator in the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Her role in the novel is to develop compassion and to show it to others, and hopefully have them become compassionate as well.
             Scout is a six year old girl. She is a tomboy, this is obvious because of her consistency in wearing overalls, and not wearing dresses very frequently, if ever. She's very strong and is average size or bigger for a girl her age.
             Scout's main trait is her intelligence. Her intelligence is known by her speech and that she asks questions when she does not understand something. When she didn't know what rape was she asked Calpurnia. When Jem and Scout met Dill Jem said "Scout yonder's been reading' ever since she was born, and she ain't even started school yet". She reads and writes in grade one even though Miss. Caroline says the way she reads and writes is incorrect, but there's no way you can read or write incorrectly. Living in a town where the majority of the town suffers from being prejudice it would be expected that a young girl who has lived her entire life in that town would be prejudice as well. This is not the case with Scout, she is very much against being prejudice. This shows extreme intelligence because she knows what is right and knows that no matter what other people believe you still have to have your own beliefs and you have to stand firmly behind what you believe, and be able to make you opinion known strongly when the opportunity occurs, which she does very well.
             When Scout states how she feels to the mob at the court house it shows that she is very courageous. She could have gotten Atticus or herself extremely badly because she told drunk men how she felt.
