These differences between men and women are fairly small compared to the similarities between them in terms of body plan, anatomy and function. These are even less marked in early childhood and later years, when hormone levels are small. Even when sex hormones are at higher levels, 'maleness¡ and 'femaleness¡ cannot be established from the hormone count alone (Oakley, 1985) some of the characteristics which are seen as biologically fixed (sexual drive or maternal instinct) could instead be seen as a product of social conditioning.
