UNIVAC I was also the first computer Americans could buy. 48 of these machines were sold, all of them to large corporations. Later during the decade researchers began experimentation on direct keyboard input, a forerunner to today's keyboard technology. Throughout this decade and throughout the rest of the century computers and their developments dominated the scientific world and American society.
