The Myth of Sisyphus

The Myth of Sisyphus demonstrate existentialist ideas because it shows that human beings must choose what they will become, there is no predetermined plan for what a person might become and humans are aware that at some point they'll die and become nothing. Sisyphus was up in heaven with all the gods but he got punished by the gods. His punishments were becoming blind and pushing a boulder up and down the mountain. This shows that Sisyphus chose what he was going to become by committing his actions and he understands that there will be an outcome to his actions. There was also no predetermined plan for what Sisyphus will become because he was a man with great wisdom but due to some incident he got punished back to the underworld. His life was totally changed from that point. Sisyphus was also aware that he was going to die so he was trying to find ways to stop his death. The knowledge of his death also caused him despair and angst which was one of the existentialist ideas and example is "His scorn of the gods, his hatred of death, and his passion for life won him that unspeakable penalty." Camus states that life is meaningless and has no value but the meaning that we create it to be. We are like Sisyphus because we are living a futile life just like how he kept moving the boulder for the rest of his life. It is like a metaphor that depicts the lives of humans in the modern world such as lives of people who work redundant jobs in offices or companies.
