Students need physical education in high school
Some students think it is not necessary to take physical education in high school. These students believe that they have nothing to gain from this class, but that is simply not true. Physical education teaches young adults skills like sportsmanship, have a physical health and get knowledge in CPR.
Playing competitive sports in physical education teaches students about sportsmanship. Having sportsmanship means being able to lose gracefully and work well with a team. These are important because later in life these same skills are critical in the work place or when dealing with friends and family. Sportsmanship is also about being fair and honest and not cheating. This, too, is important because our society would not be where it is today if everyone tried to cut corners and cheat their way through life. A good example of a company that had employees that tried to cheat their way through was Enron. Some people got rich off lying and cheating, but most lost all their retirement money from the scam.
The next reason that students should have a physical education class is that they do not get physically active enough to stay fit. According to the U.S. Department Of Health and Human Services, in America, we have a huge problem with obesity. Right now, there are over sixty million adults that are obese or over weight. Of these eighty five percent of them were obese as children. The percent of adolescents age twelve to nineteen years of age that are overweight or obese has tripled since the year nineteen eighty. Besides weight down, physical education classes also increase flexibility, strength, and endurance. Almost all non-sport participating students have below average flexibility and little muscular endurance. A study done at Oshkosh West High School showed a lack of endurance during the pacer test.
