The Old Testament is about preparing for the coming of Jesus. There are many things that happened before Jesus was actually born, such as Passover. In addition, many people had the duties of spreading the word of Yahweh and Jesus. There are many "types of Christ," or people who fulfilled the duties similar to Jesus.
The whole Old Testament leads up to the New Testament and the birth of Jesus Christ.
God gave Moses the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament as rules to follow to be a true Christian. If the people of the time could follow these rules, then they were prepared for the coming of Jesus.
The covenant that God made with his people was given to Moses at the top of Mt. Sinai. They had two traditions for the covenant - the chief men of Israel would have a sacred meal at the top of the mountain and at the base of the hill the Israelites would make a sacrifice and sprinkle blood in a sign of thanksgiving. This is similar to how Jesus had a sacred meal called The Last Supper and he gave himself as the sacrifice. Jesus is foreshadowing previous events from the New Testament to the Old Testament.
Another important event leading from the Old Testament to the New Testament is Passover. On Passover the angel of death passes over all the doors marked with blood. The lamb symbolizes Christ's body and blood that he sacrificed to save people from the slavery of sin. That is why Jesus is called "Lamb of God." Jesus was the perfect sacrifice because he never sinned, and he saved us from the power of sin and everlasting death.
During Passover Jesus had his farewell dinner called The Last Supper, making himself the sacrifice. He gave his people bread in honor of his body and gave them wine in honor of his blood. People see Jesus as the New Passover, and it is because of him that we can escape sin and evil.
