In the summer, I live on our sailboat in New Castle, New Hampshire. She is a 44' Golf Star and her name is Water Song. I have lived on a sailboat every summer since I was six years old. Our first boat was a Pearson 31. When we first bought her, down below felt so big, since we were so small. We would pretend the aft-birth was a cave and make forts with all of our suitcases, sleeping bags, and pillows. We could stay down there for full days at sail because we never got seasick. As we began to grow, the small boat began to get cramped for all five of us and sometimes a guest. Finally, two years ago, we got the boat we now have today. Once again we all can fit comfortably.
             My family and I enjoy many long days sailing on the swirling waves of the ocean. My brother Tyler and I run back and forth uncovering a sail here, uncoiling a line there, preparing the boat for sailing. My favorite job is climbing up the two folding 'steps' bolted to the mast. The 'steps' are about the size of my palm and are tough on my toes. Once I climb up and attach the sail to the main halyard and Tyler and I raise the sail, it's well worth the preparation work. Once the sails are up and everything is tied away, I return to my 'steps.' Although you are only four feet off the deck, the view is amazing. The mysterious ocean fades into the horizon. The sun glimmers on the water like a star in the night sky. If we are lucky we even see whales swimming along gracefully. We will follow them for a while, watching their backs slice through the water. My family and I make up whale calls, brimming with laughter with some of the noises we create. Finally, we must go in for the night. We return to the marina, windblown and tan from the beating sun.
