"Trifles"

             "Trifles" takes place in 1916 where the rights of women are yet to be stated, a place that is ruled by the paterfamiliae, the men. Only men know what is right, only men know what is best for their family. Men criticize women a lot and make fun of them. Men do not understand the difficulty of these duties and the hard working hours that are needed to keep a farmhouse tidy and well organized. Women just make their lives easier by cooking, cleaning, caring for the children and "worrying over trifles". This type of living made the lively, singing, happy Minnie Foster turn in to a mentally-disturbed, cold and routine robot 30 years ago when she married Mr. Wright.
             A murder case like this at that particular time was a shocking thing to solve because it involved tiny details that men could not understand or view without the help of women, details that are present in women's household lifestyle. While the story develops Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters find an assortment of clues that gives a motive for the murder to take place but they decide to hide it because they understood Mrs. Wright. All the factors that led Mrs. Wright to snap and commit murder, the hard and cold husband, daily hard chores in the farmhouse, the killing of her singing canary and being a lonely, child-less woman, they, as women, can relate to.
             The main conflict in "Trifles" is the moral justice versus the legal justice, by this meaning that justice can be based on what somebody's conscience suggests is right or wrong, rather than on what the strict law says to be done in other words manipulating the law. In this drama it could be said that Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale represent moral justice and that the Sheriff, Hale and the County Attorney represent legal justice. I can only say that moral justice prevailed and that law should not be so strict in some cases because there are more psychological aspects in the human mind not availabl
