Some people say that family is the most important influence on teenagers, but I feel that their friends influence them the most. The majority of teenagers are influenced by their friends, as they spend most of their time together, and friends determine a teenagers' social standing.
Teenagers spend an overwhelming amount of time with their friends. Our social structures encourage this. Teenagers spend a majority of their days and time in school: approximately eight hours a day, five days a week. Their friends surround children while they are at school, and, in this environment, they engage in social learning. Children develop attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors similar to those of their friends. Teenagers also spend a great deal of their time taking part in extracurricular activities such as soccer, baseball, acting, and boy scouts. These activities are centered on group learning and interaction, and are therefore greatly influenced by their friends.
Social standing is greatly influenced by teenagers' friends. Their cohorts evaluate teenagers by the friends that surround them. In this way, young adults surround themselves with socially desirable friends and they adopt their friends' attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. In order to be socially accepted or popular, teenagers adapt their personalities so that they feel socially ensure with their position and standing. Teenagers who are members of a soccer team for example, tend to act, dress, and think alike.
As you can see from the above, young adults are greatly influenced by their friends. Friends provide a framework for personality, as children spend the majority of their time associating with their friends. Friend influence is encouraged through school, extracurricular activities, and social standing.
