Lord of the Flies

             Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding is an allegorical novel dealing with a group of young boys stranded on a deserted island, who gradually adapt to their isolated society. As time passes, the society crumbles. Whatever order, organization, and moral integrity were established during the beginning of their time of the island rapidly vanishes and is replaced by chaos and savagery. The most prominent theme in this novel is that society holds everyone together, and without a structured society and controlled society, our ideals, values, and the basic sense of right and wrong are lost. Without society's strict rules, anarchy and savagery can come to light. Golding uses symbolism to convey this theme to his audience. Golding chose many objects to use as symbolic figures. A few of the more prominent of these objects are actually the characters themselves.
             Golding uses Piggy to symbolize knowledge, structure, and authority in the society. Piggy was never welcomed by the other boys. "We don't want you," Jack had told Piggy. (Golding, 21) Authority is often rejected in our society as well. Golding isolated Piggy by creating his character to be much more mature and older in spirit than the other boys. This isolation, along with Piggy's wisdom, allow him to remain relatively unchanged throughout the de-evolution of the society. Piggy always retains his civilized behaviour. Piggy's knowledge is far greater than that of the other boys, and it brings him the self-confidence to speak his mind. Piggy obeys the rules and fully understand why they were implemented in the first place. Golding uses Piggy to represent the 'good' end of the spectrum of good versus evil. Throughout the novel, Piggy is concerned only of their basic needs and the ultimate goal of rescue. Piggy's glasses also symbolize profound wisdom.
