y their general business profiles and marketing structure
Domestic air industry in Canada presented by the five major and other 30 air carriers (Air liberalization, 2004). WJ and AC are two commercial carriers but they are not equal. WJ is a regional airline company, which is the second largest in Canada, with a head office in Calgary. WJ provides low-fare, air transportation across western Canada and in United States. According to Lofaro (2000), "WestJet began flying in early 1996, with 220 employees and three aircraft that served five cities" that were Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg (p.D3). Since that time, WJ has been continuing to expand its route network, so right now it "serves 24 Canadian destinations and eight U.S. destinations" (Schmidt, 2005, p. D3b); the company also uses 66 Boeings 737s ("WestJet may,"2004). According to Ferguson (2004), WJ hopes to serve around 7.0 million customers in 2005 on the domestic market. The charters for professional sports teams and corporate clients are also offered by WJ.
On the other hand, AC is the major air carrier in Canada. This company was established on April 10, 1937 by the Parliament of Canada to provide passenger, cargo and mail transportation services by air (McArthur, 2004). Today, AC is the 13th largest airline company in the world ("Air liberalization", 2004), and remains a Canadian owned company. The primary focuses of AC are domestic, international and trans-border transportation services. AC also offers cargo and engine maintenance services, tour packages, loyalty program, and internet site for travelers. Some additional services offered by AC are passenger, cargo, and ground handling services for other airline companies (Air Canada [AC], 2004). AC holds 60% of domestic passenger market (Chipello, 2004) and flies to 58 destinations in Canada.
