The class including students with special needs in the regular classroom has been helpful to my career as a health teacher in a middle school. The strategies of the student assessment team, co-teaching, and behavior accommodation have been very successful in teaching students with special needs.
             The student assessment team is a support structure designed to help teachers meet the needs of students who have learning and behavioral difficulties as well as students identified as gifted. The team consists of staff members who meet regularly to assist classroom teacher. Our student assessment team meets once a month and is made up of school psychologist and the assistant principal. As a result the academic teacher is able to identify a problem, benefit from the other professionals brainstorming, find a solution and develop a successful strategy. The student benefits from the student assessment team because teachers, administrators, and counselors in a program that is tailored to their needs.
             Co-teaching has also been a successful strategy. Co-teaching is when an academic teacher teams up with a special education teacher to instruct one inclusive class. Although both teachers must sacrifice some of their control over the class, the academic teacher benefits from the insight of the special education teacher in dealing with special needs students, such as testing modifications, extended time and other strategies. The student benefits from co-teaching because in one class they receive academic instruction that is fine tuned by the special education teacher to their specific needs.
             Behavioral accommodations have helped me deal with difficult students. Antecedent control strategies have been very effective. Antecedent control strategies are events or activities that precede behaviors and influence the probability of a behavior occurring.
