Decisions

             Making decisions is often difficult to do. The hardest decisions that have to be made are life decisions. The life one lives is strongly influenced by the society you live in. You make decisions according to what you think your society is going to approve, not disapprove. Society has a major role in the choices one, as an individual, has to make ."Crimes of Conscience", written by Nadine Gordimer tells short stories about the people of South Africa. The short stories Country Lovers and Ultimate Safari, by Gordimer, contribute prime examples of how society takes part in the decisions people make in life.
            
             In the short story, Country Lovers, by Gordimer, Paulus had always been great friends with Thebedi. It was almost safe to say that he loved her and cared about her. Paulus made love to Thebedi and impregnated her without knowing. Thebedi gave birth to the child and the little was white like Paulus. Paulus came home to find out the Thebedi had given birth and when he saw the white little girl, he did the unthinkable.
             She thought she heard small grunts from the hut, the kind of infant grunt that indicates a full stomach, a deep sleep. After a time, long or short she did not know, he came out a walked away with plodding stride (his father's gait) out of sight, towards his father's house. (Gordimer 24)
             Paulus poisoned the baby girl and killed her. The reason Paulus killed his daughter was because her mother, Thebedi, was a black servant. Society would never forgive Paulus for impregnating Thebedi and Paulus didn't want anything to get in the way of his reputation. This a prime example of society plays an important role in the decisions you make in life.
