In this fiction you can see that Emily is the main character which the whole story revolves around. Throughout the story, she goes through physical and mental changes. Emily's character is rebellious, cold, and distant, which draws her town people to be so curious and interested in her life.
The whole town is obsessed with her life. They want to know what is going on with her at all times; they watch her in such a prying way. In Emily's life, there were a couple of incidents that occur and change her forever. Her father died which changed Emily dramatically.
Her father's death frightened her at first; she did not know what to do because she always had him to guide her. He controlled her life until he was gone, then she was free to do anything that she wanted. She was left with a house and nothing else. That's when she rebelled against her father by doing everything he would not have approved of while he was alive.
At first, the town felt sorry and pity for her. When Emily starts seeing a man, the town was happy for her and they actually were pleased to see her move on and maybe have a family of her own. In time, the town was getting upset with her because Emily was doing things that were not appropriate in a Southern town. She was rebelling against the strict morality of her town. She didn't marry the man she was seeing and he had disappeared within couple of days of their relationship.
Emily was cold towards people. She kept to herself in her home. Once the man she was dating left, she pulled away from everything and everyone. For many years she did not get out of the house. People in the town were making up their own assumptions of what happened to Emily. The town always talked about her. Her character was something that drew people's attention. Her life was something everyone wondered about and talked about, because the town's people were bored with their own routine lives.
