the Terahnee), is now nothing but a
lying, inhuman society. Before discussing a flashback in the novel, let's begin with a little of D'ni
history. They possess magical writing skills which allow them to create worlds by writing a book.
Whatever they describe in this book becomes a reality. Once completed they can link to this newly
created world. We can look at this as the creation of earth, the D'ni being our god for creating us.
The thing is that it was wrong for the D'ni to act or feel like gods to any of the worlds they
created. A flashback that Atrus has interprets all of the information on D'ni history, comparing
Terahnee to his own father. In the present he saw how the Terahnee acted like gods and used
slavery to keep their society working. This made him think of his past when his father still lived.
Atrus' father was quite different then him. He acted like a god who took slaves to do his deeds
when it came to writing ages. Much like the Terahnee. The flashback that occured to Atrus made
him realise the problem he was facing and then helped him decide that the Terahnee and what they
were doing had to be stopped. As we analyse the climax of the novel, we find out what great
changes Atrus has made to the land of Terahnee. As he is now mentor for the slaves, who
outnumber the Terahnee two billion to two million, knows that he will be able to stop slavery and
free the two billion men and women who have suffered for much too long. The Terahnee who are
fighting back for their lives of riches and lies are erased from existance as one by one the slaves
defeat them to win the war. From then on the slaves are free, and the land of Terhnee is but ruins.
