In this paper I will show how directing and controlling are part of a manager's job. In addition, I will show how directing and controlling affect the successful implementation of my human resources strategy.
According to Ronald J. Ebert and Ricky W. Griffin in their book, Business Essentials Fifth Edition, when directing, a manager works to guide and motivate employees to meet the firm's objectives. I believe directing is an integral part of a manager's job. When a manager directs employees in a motivating and positive manner, they have a tendency toward job satisfaction and high morale. In their Special Reports Volume 6, Effective Management Through Measurement, Managing Job Satisfaction, Bavendam Research Incorporated reports that employees with higher job satisfaction:
• believe that the organization will be satisfying in the long run
• care about the quality of their work
• are more committed to the organization
Morale is defined as the overall attitude that employees have toward their workplace (Ebert, Griffin). It is imperative that managers motivate and lead employees in a way that makes them feel positive about their job and the contributions they are making to the company.
