             HEMINGWAY'S FAREWELL TO ARMS: A GOOD NOVEL, A POPULAR NOVEL
             Hemingway's novel A Farewell to Arms (1929) is basically structured around natural symbols that replace emotions and feelings. Characters endure the coldness and cruelty of the war but there is mention neither of pain nor of mourning. Hemingway's language uses suggestive words in order to retain emotions. Thus, the reader can feel them with spontaneity. This style of writing is also used to create irony. Symbols and single words are involved in the process of understatement throughout the novel. The popularity of the novel relies on the association of a tale of war and of love, on the reader's emotional bounds and identification with the main character, Lieutenant Frederic Henry, and on Hemingway's message about existence. The Frederic's quest reflects human psychology and its characteristics.
             The novel is considered as a good one. Indeed, there is a powerful unity between the events. First, the structure of the novel is based on natural symbols. Actually, the nature becomes a substitute for emotions and feelings. Therefore, the rapid progress of the seasons from summer into autumn in the first chapter relates to the larger transitions in the novel as a whole. For instance, the first part of the novel takes place in a dry atmosphere until the moment when Catherine informs Henry that she is pregnant . It is raining. Thus, the most meaningful of these symbols is that of rain. The reader needs to understand rain as a symbol of death, grief, pain or despair. Fear of rain is set up in chapter nineteen when Catherine Barkley speaks with Frederic Henry: "I am afraid of the rain because sometimes I see me dead in it."(114). Consequently, rain as a symbol is always brought up to foreshadow something bad that is going to happen to her. If Catherine is afraid of the rain, it is because she sees death in it as she claims.
