Connections

             Relationships are the mechanisms of life that make the world go round. Personal, spiritual, mental and physical relations give the chaos of life its meaning. Mankind's desire to be loved and give love offers mankind its biggest motivation for creativity.
             It is this creativity that we seek to study today. The focus of this essay is to establish connections between any two of the readings assigned to us this term.
             All the stories assigned so far have been focused on different types of relationships. Social, personal and family relationships are universal in nature. These subjects not only cross national boundaries, but across time as well.
             Since the beginning of time man has grappled with the differences in races and cultures. Social injustice is every bit a valid discussion today as it was forty years ago during the time of the civil rights movement. The fight against apathy is as prevalent today as it was in earlier times.
             Another type of relationships is the family structure. The burden of expectation is one that continues to grow. As humanity grows more sophisticated, so does the expectation of continued success amongst a growing population. The generation gap is one we all try to cover, only to realize it takes us further away from the old way.
             Of all the relationships discussed thus far personal relationships have proven most difficult to manage. More importantly the interpersonal relationship between men and women is a struggle that we continue to manage. This aspect of life proves more difficult as a young adult. Finding identity through these times seems to be a hit or miss proposition.
             Young adults often times finding themselves asking life defining questions.
             For these reasons we will examine and attempt to connect the relationships and women discussed in Hills Like White Elephants and Rappiccini's Daughter.
