The issues can be related back to Pratt's ideas of miscomprehension and oppression of langue development, few of many risks that the subordinate group takes on when living with in a "contact zone" (Pratt 592). Another case of oppression that Anzaldua mentioned was her experience at Pan American University, where they tried to repress the development of the Chicano language, by required students to take speech classes to get rid of their accent. Though all the situations took place in an academic setting, where the relationship of teachers and students parallels to the relationship between superior and subordinate, Anzaldua managed to define the term "contact zone" in more details by relating it with her personal experience and talked about how emotionally disturbed she was by the issues created within the "contact zone".
