In the play entitled Death of a Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, focuses on the life of Willy Loman who seems to be living his life a lie. He has a very low self esteem and he is constantly going into flashbacks from 1928. He eventually becomes so mentally unstable that he convinces himself that taking his life would be the best option for him. There are many factors that contributed to this decision, but the main three are: his son Biff, his job and work environment, and his wife Linda.
Willy is very proud of his son Biff and only wants the best for him. He is always bragging about him saying how great and successful Biff is going to be, even though that Biff has not been able to keep a steady job and it is eventually revealed that he was in jail.
When Willy talks about his suicide plan to Ben, he says its "the only way.."(134). He also says "Can you imagine the magnificence with $20000 in his pocket?"(135) which is referring to his life insurance. He plans to give it all to Biff so that he can start his own business so he can be just as successful as himself. He reassures himself that this is the right decision by saying "..he'll [Biff] worship me for it.."(135). Willy thinks that by taking his life, he will impress Biff and Biff will love him even more.
His job and work environment also contribute to his death. Willy was always stressed and was not successful. He would tell his kids that he would make much more money than he actually did and makes up stories to impress them. He says he Is going to start his own business and be more successful than his brother Charley because Caharley is liked but not "well-liked". Willy keeps living in this fantasy world where he thinks he is a very successful business-man when in fact he was barely making enough money to pay the bills.
