The play Equus is written by Peter Shaffer in 1973. It takes place in the same time as it is written. The story is about a psychiatrist called Dysart, who in the beginning is living his life in ignorance of the things which are missing. When his friend Hester one day comes into his office and wants him to take in a new patient – Alan, a boy who has blinded six horses. From this moment both of their life's changes.
             The difference between the book and the film is Alan and Dysarts roles, even though the action is the same there is a difference. In the film Dysart is playing a very big role and there is no doubt that he is the central character, but in the play they are almost equal and it can be discussed who the play really is about. In my opinion Dysart is the main character of the play because we hear about him both before and after Alan comes into the play and into his life. In addition to that I believe that Alan is only a symbol of the passion which are missing in Dysarts life. If you where to mix the values that Dysart and Alan are in possession of you would get a hole human being, because Alan got the things that Dysart is missing – the passion and - reverse. Dysart is the one you would define as the normal one, but he admires Alan and the way he can just let himself go and live out his passion.
             As previous mentioned is the thing which is missing in Dysarts life the passion, he is having trouble finding it both in his job and in his private life – his marriage. He is a living prove that you cannot live without passion in our life. Several times through the story we hear Dysart talking about how something is missing in his life and that he hasn't got anyone to share the only passion that he got the passion for Greece, he wishes that he had someone to take there and discover Greece with, this I see as a symbol that he would like to have someone to share his passion with and someone to build more passion with.
