How does the phenomena of language affect
Higher emotion, personal memory and self awareness?
It is recognized world wide that language and the ability to communicate as we (the human race) are able to is what separates us from the animals. It's astonishing how language has developed and essentially opened a doorway for all things humans cherish most-higher emotion, personal memory and self awareness. Many factors have played a role in language development. In order to understand the roots of language you could take a look at chimps since we share 99% of our genetic make up.
Examining the communication of chimps for a moment it is clear to see that the simple, instinctive alarm calls of monkeys can viewed in contrast to the expressive gestures and/or emotional cry which is commonly used by great apes. This type of communication an animal is able to primitively express its inner feelings. A chimp, for example, might hoot with anger, screech with fear or jubilate with happiness. Such responses are already instinctive since a chimp already knows how to hoot and screech and associates these responses to its inner feelings. Taking this a step further you learn that an emotional cry does not necessarily trigger a response in the listener, since he needs a certain amount of intelligence to interpret the call and figure out the cause of distress. The calls and cries of chimps although effective they are not the true form of communication, in which an animal deliberately sends a message to another member of the species rather than simply giving a voice to its emotions. In true communication, signaling comes under the control of the conscious cortex rather than the subconscious emotional system.
It has been proved that chimpanzees can indeed communicate in this deliberate manner. Chimps often employ a variety of creative gestures and facial expressions to communicate with one another. Most importantly however there is a level of i...
