Compassion is showing sympathy for the suffering of others, often including a desire to help those in need. I am a very compassionate person who looks out for people even when I am not obligated to do so. I feel that it is my responsibility to help others so that I can make a difference in their lives. In a recent experience, I showed compassion towards a mentally challenged individual because my emotions compelled me to take action.
             About three months ago, I was walking down the senior hallway to go to my fourth period class. On my way there, I noticed a couple of kids picking on a mentally challenged student. They were pushing him around and knocking his books out of his hands. After that, one of them pushed the boy against a locker. At this point, I became very disturbed and immediately approached the group. When I got there, I pulled off the kid that was pushing the boy against the locker. Then I told all of them to leave him alone and they hurried off down the hallway. After that, I helped the boy pick up his books and pull himself together. On his face, he had the brightest smile that I have ever seen and then he said, "You're my friend. Thank you giant." I will never forget when he said that because it put a smile on my face knowing that I made a difference in his life. Later on, I found out from a teacher that his name is David and he has Down Syndrome. Like David, we cannot choose the circumstances that we are born with. However, we can choose the way we interact with other people. That is why I decided to help David out instead of ignoring the fact that he was not being treated fairly. If I were in his situation, I would hate to have people pick on me and not be able to do anything about it. God did not put us here to make other people's lives miserable.
