The Graduate

             Mike Nichols' The Graduate is a hysterical comedy that has become this memorable classic that even to this day our generation can relate to. It wasn't just Nichols who made this great movie but Calder Willingham, the screenwriter for The Graduate, also helps create this timeless classic by giving us this comedy that at the same time makes us laugh, feel, and think. Vintenburgs Festen a.k.a. Celebration brings us this controversial material that we the audience have to look for these clues. Even though this movie is in Danish, the actors send a powerful message that breaks that language barrier leaving us with a lasting impression.
             Nichols' The Graduate the screenplay is excellent because he never stops to make sure we are understanding the point, he does not make it obvious. For example there are movies out there that point out the obvious like you here knocking at the door and the actor says "oh I'm going to get the door". Hello? We're not that stupid we know that if you hear the door knock, you go answer it. It makes the audience seem like we are slow in the head when we are not. In Nichols The Graduate he gives us the dignity and freedom to try to understand the complexity of it all without giving us the answers. Throughout the entire story I never once felt that the story was out of place. He kept it unified, he never jumped from once place to another. He showed us this progression by using the music of Simon and Garfunkel to show the passage of time, especially when he mixes in one scene into the next like the pool scene. He keeps the movie credible and interesting. I always wanted to see what was coming next and he never made me feel bored. The best part of all he kept it simple but at the same time complex.
