According to Charmichael and Hamilton, black people must redefine themselves and no one can do that for them (Charmichael, 37). There are many stereotypes that limit the oppressed, black people, and what they can achieve. Black women are politically and economically dependent (Mohanty, 307). Prostitution is the only source of work for black women, (Mohanty, 307) and there is a glass ceiling placed over the heads of black men in the corporate world. If we, as black people, limit ourselves to the stereotypes and beliefs of those who choose to oppress, then we are doing ourselves an injustice. Charmichael and Hamilton said it best, "When we begin to define our own image, the stereotypes that our oppressor had developed will begin in the white community and end there. The black community will have a positive image of itself that it has created."(Charmichael, 37).
