             I watched the movie "Spanglish" about the cultural groups of the Mexicans coming to America and a single parent's experience of 'becoming' American. I choose this movie for two main reasons, first being that a friend recommended it, and second I wanted to watch it for pure entertainment. I was informed it was a good movie but the main character was not the American actor but the Mexican woman and for a comedy that was supposed to be for fun. When I did watch it, it 'accidentally hit home'. Upon watching it the second time for this assignment, I realized it was a perfect choice.
             When I watched the movie I could see many correlations between that story and my own life story. Parents want the best for their child, whether it to be a nice home, the ability to have fun, brand-new clothes, or a great education. Many times parents sacrifice things to obtain that goal for their children. Everyone has barriers in life some accept these as challenges. Love and the desire to communicate are truly universal concepts. When there is motivation behind a challenge, anything is possible. The relationship between a mother and daughter could be a whole paper in and of itself. Some people will only learn when there is a reason for that knowledge.
             My own values and belief system were more closely related to the Mexican mother, Flor, which was a surprise to me. I felt as if I could relate to her more than the American family. I really at this point in life can not be sure exactly why this would be, maybe because of Flor being a single mom, the language problems, the working hard to improve their lives, or as simple as wanting better for my daughter.
             It is my belief that the value of money and a work ethic is not only a cultural value but also a family value. The American children were spoiled by the financial success of their father. It was obvious that they were given whatever money they asked
