Imagine yourself living back in the Stone Age era, and being the sole provider for your family. You had to hunt for food using the only available tool, a bow and arrow. Thank goodness this is now the modern time, you just go to the grocery store for food, but the art of archery remains a fixture today as it was back in the Stone Age.
             It is believed that archery was invented in the Stone Age, but there have been no evidence of the actual time. The Egyptians were thought to have been the earliest people known to have used the bow and arrow for purposes of hunting and warfare. Archery became a recreational sport at the end of the 30's Year War (1618-1648).
             Archery was featured in the Olympics Games in the 1900's. The sport was eliminated from the Olympic program for fifty years due to the lack of uniformed international rules for competition. The sport re-appeared in 1972 when enough countries adopted the FITA (Federation Internationale de Tir a l' Arc) rules for competition. Initially, individual events for men and women's took place. In the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, team competitions were added to the program.
             The "tools of the trade" for an archer is a bow, a few arrows, and a target. The bow is made of either wood or fiberglass and graphite or carbon composites. The arrows are 9.3 millimeters in diameter and consist of aluminum or carbon graphite. The target usually is made of paper, measuring to a diameter of 122 centimeters. On the target are five colored rings each divided in half, representing a certain amount of points. The bullseye is 12.2 centimeters in diameter and 1.3 meters above the ground is worth ten points, the highest awarded. From the center ring going out, each ring is one less point than the previous one. Points are earned depending on where the arrow lands. If an arrow lands on a line, the higher point is awarded.
