During the two weeks I was assigned a project in which I had to observe a child and listen to him talk. I chose my cousin's son Equanta Jeffrey. He's three years old and very energetic. In the following paragraphs I am going to discuss the developmental areas motor, cognition, socialization, and communication, general development for a three year old, and the development of the child I observed.
             The first developmental area I am going to discuss is motor development. Motor development is the study of changes in motor behavior which reflect the interaction of the
             maturation and the environment. The second developmental area is cognition. Cognition is generally referred to as the changes which occur to a person's cognitive structures, abilities, and processes. The third developmental area is socialization. Socialization is the process by which children and others adopt the behavior patterns of the culture that surrounds them. The final developmental area I will define is communication. Communication is the activity of conveying information, interchange of thoughts or opinions, by conference or other means.
             The developmental milestones for a three year old include speaking clearly with few errors, running with more control, climbing, the ability to throw and kick a ball, ride a tricycle, dress and undress themselves, eat with a fork and spoon, control their bladder and bowel functions during the day and sometimes at night, play imaginatively with toys and show affection to younger brothers or sisters. A 3-year-old may also begin using rude words, lying, and stealing in order to taunt parents and test limits. Speech development is very exciting for parents as they watch their children begin to speak clearly and interact with others.
