The short story, "Hunters in the Snow" written by Tobias Wolff, is a tale about male bonding and a hunting trip that turns disastrous because of secrets. There are three characters, Tub, Kenny, and Frank who are not truthful to each other during the course of their friendship. It is because of their lies, distrust, and decisions that lead them on the road to destruction.
Tub is a large man who has an over-eating problem. He lies to his friends that he has a problem with his glands to explain away his weight problem. In the presence of his friends he eats healthy, "Tub ate one hard-boiled egg and a stick of celery." (118) But when he is alone, he secretly devours all the wrong foods. His friends notice that he is actually gaining weight, not losing it. They confront him and torment him more about his weight, which does more damage to his state of mind. This contributes to Tub shooting Kenny.
Frank is portrayed as a manly man. He is always telling Tub to "stop bitching" and "get centered." Frank has a secret of his own. He confides in Kenny about his adulterous relationship with the babysitter, Roxanne Brewer who is fifteen years old. He thinks he is in love with her and tries to convince his buddy that she has a lot to offer. Frank is often thinking about his dilemma and does not pay attention to what he is doing while on the hunting trip. Later in the story, Frank tells Tub his secret and reveals he wants to leave his wife.
Kenny is the final character of the story. Kenny comes across to be a joker and a know it all. He knew about Frank's secret and would purposely make comments here and there about the babysitter in the presence of Tub. Kenny also knew about the hunting ground and the owner. He already knew about the dog being sick, but didn't reveal this to Tub and Frank for it would give Kenny the upper hand. Kenny always thought he knew more than everyone el...
