The Civil War

             During the Civil War, the country underwent tremendous transformation politically and economically. Republican politics played a major role in stimulating the economic growth of the North and the West. Six events that happened during the Civil War helped the country undergo these political and economical transformations. The Morrill Land Grant Act, the Pacific Railway Act, The Homestead act, the Wade-Davis Bill, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Freedmen's Bureau all helped either economically or politically and were important at that time. They also encouraged the way the country was governed after the Civil War.
             The Morrill Act which was passed in 1862 helped the country on the economic side. The Act, which reflected the Republican belief in the importance of public education, committed the federal government to grant each state thirty thousand acres of public land per representative and senator in Congress. The Act mainly focused on the practical education for farmers and workers. The Act was sponsored by Senator Justin Morrill of Vermont. With the land the state would sell land to different buyers in that state and the money would be used to finance institutions, and other schools. The buyers of the land built campuses on the land bought and many major universities like Nebraska and Washington State were put up. The Morrill Act was important because it set new standards for education and the education of farmers and workers. The way the country was governed changed greatly on the economic side due to the fact that there were now Universities and colleges being put up.
             The Pacific Railway Act which Congress passed in 1862 helped the country on the economic side. The Pacific Railway Act designated the thirty-second parallel as the initial transcontinental route and gave railroad companies huge grants of lands for rights of way.
