ake¡ allows us to see the link between knowledge and Satan. In other words, it is precisely Satan in the form of a snake, or the 'Tempter¡, who persuades Eve into eating the fruit from the forbidden Tree of Knowledge, which supposedly brings knowledge of good and evil. The following passages from Paradise Lost clearly demonstrate these statements:
             ¡§For now, and since first break of dawn, the Fiend,
             Mere serpent in appearance, forth was come,
             And on his quest where likeliest he might find
             The only two of mankind, but in them
             The whole included race, his purposed prey.¡
             (Paradise Lost. Book IX. Lines 412 to 416)
             ¡§Queen of this universe, do not believe
             Those rigid threats of death; ye shall not die
             How should ye? by the fruit? It gives you life
             (Paradise Lost. Book IX. Lines 684 to687)
             Deterred not from achieving what might lead
             To happier life, knowledge of good and evil¡K¡
             (Paradise Lost. Book IX. Lines 695 to 697)
             These quotations illustrate how the unrestrained desire for knowledge appears to be, in a complex way, related to Satan. In the case of Paradise Lost, it is through Satan¡s persuasive speeches that the mother of humankind is induced to disobey God by doing precisely what He had forbidden her to do: eating from the Tree of Knowledge. Although Frankenstein is not persuaded by Satan to commit a sin -if that is what the consequence of his thirst for knowledge might be called- it is remarkable that Frankenstein associates his quest for knowledge with a serpent, which, for the above-mentioned reason, has connotations of the devil. Therefore, it can be said that in both works of art there is a striking connection between Satan, and forbidden knowledge, which leads to sin.
