Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports in north America. It's origin dates back to the 1400's. A t first it was called "baggataway", hundreds and sometimes thousands of people played at the same time, the game lasted 2-3 days, and the goals were miles apart, today there are only 12 players, a game lasts about an hour, and the goals are 90-120 yards apart.
Some equipment used is the "stick", helmet, facemask, and gloves. If you wanted you can wear shoulder pads, elbow pads, or eye protectants.
The stick's official name is the "Crosse" & it has a handle, head, Throat, and pocket, which is usually made of rawhide or cloth strips weaved together.
Some Interesting things about Lacrosse are that only 8 teams participated in the 1st NCAA tournament in 1971, if the ball goes out of bounds the referee blows the whistle and everybody stays where they are at the team that has a player closest to the ball, regardless of who hit it out, is awarded possession, of the 80 NCAA sponsored sports Lacrosse is ranked the 5th highest in merchandise sales, New York University fielded the college team in 1877, and men and women's Lacrosse were played under virtually the same rules, with no equipment , until the mid1930's.
There are 3 attack players called 1st home, 2nd home, and 3rd home, there are 5 midfielders, 2 attack wings,2 defensive wings, and the center, and there are three defensive players called the point, cover point, and 3rd man, there is also one goalkeeper. Fouls are either considered minor fouls or major fouls. Major fouls consist of charges, pushes, trips, blocks, or making any type of physical contact. Minor fouls consist of using his or heir's stick to block a groundball, if a player kick or touches the ball with their hand.
In conclusion Lacrosse is an interesting, but uncommon sport.
