There are many versions of Cinderella. Some of the tales are recognizable as the Disney version and others are completely different. Two of the many versions that are available are The Enchanted Anklet, translated and adapted by Lila Mehta and illustrated by Neela Chhaniara which is an East Indian version. The second version I looked at was the Native American version known as The Rough Faced Girl, written by Rafe Martin and illustrated by Benjamin Walker. I like these two versions because they are recognizable as a Cinderella story, but the two tales are different enough to keep the story interesting. I especially liked the use of native language in The Enchanted Anklet and cultural references made in each of the stories. The use of native language and cultural references could allow for further discussion of that particular culture and it keeps the tale true to the country of origin.
             The Enchanted Anklet is most like the Cinderella story many children grow up with. Cinduri has a step-mother and a step-sister. She even has a fairy-god mother in the form of a snake that lives in the lake. The Rough Faced Girl also has mean sisters, but she does not have to contend with an evil step-mother, only a father who does not seem to notice her. Another odd thing about the story of The Rough Faced Girl, is that she has no name, making her even less important. As each girl in the two tales attempt to be accepted for who they are, both come across obstacles in their paths. Cinduri must endure the hardships imposed upon her by her step-mother by working on the farm and being made to look after the farm animals while her step-mother and step-sister attend a festival. The Rough-Faced Girl wants beads and a buckskin so that she may look beautiful, but her father has nothing left to give her as he's already given what he had to her sisters.
