Many people who were using reason for the first time were people who believed in deism. Deism meant that they should believe in God because it was the most logical way of thought. Prior to the 18th-century universalism did not exist. It didn't really surface until the Enlightenment and it saw people as equals, that they are alike all over. There were no allowances for differences and it certainly did not promote individualism. In universalism, a population that had universal education would have a democracy.
