Purpose: To inform the reader of the impact of betrayal in Romulus' life.
Audience: Adults, readers of autobiographies.
Romulus personal experience of betrayal impacted him greatly he became ill and soon after insanity followed. He was a simple man but morally strong nevertheless his strength could not prepare him for the betrayals in his life. His moral world was valuing people by their honesty, loyalty, courage, charity and their capacity for hard work which was the virtues most prized in those days.
Betrayal to Romulus this time around was a great shock this threw him into confusion/bewilderment. Romulus was a man that demanded the truth from all that knew him, he had this innocence about him which had not been threatened by the wrongs done to him by Christine and Mitru as their actions were not as calculating as Lydia's.
Christine's and Mitru's betrayal was rather different as they did not calculate and didn't betray him on purpose, to them it just happened that they fell in love and what's most important is that Romulus understood the situation that it wasn't a personal attack on him, and that Christine was too depressed to be able to calculate a way of betraying him she just was trying to cope with her situation as best as possible even though through her meaningless actions she was hurting and betraying him but that was her nature with coping with everything and Romulus seemed to understand this. Romulus also didn't hold a grudge on Mitru as he understood that it wasn't his fault all in all and that he too did not calculate ahead to betray Romulus in anyway.
Romulus' world fell apart after finding out about Lydia's marriage in which time Romulus made so many plans for her arrival and even contemplating on building a house on the property he bought just for them to settle in together to be free of any worries but was short lived when she betrayed him
