Beauty can be found in any story or situation. Even in Popular Mechanics, despite the very dark, morbid tone there are several examples of beauty. The story begins by describing a setting which is actually very beautiful. Recently it has snowed, so it must be winter, which is a very beautiful season to many. The snow that is covering the ground is beginning to melt, suggesting a cool, but not freezing temperature. The author describes the scene as "getting dark," thus it is not night just yet. Most likely it is in that beautiful time just after the sun has gone down, where everything is cool and dim.
The story portrays a very commonplace scenario where a couple is fighting and the man is planning on leaving. While fighting is not the most wonderful of human interactions, it is complex and demonstrates how beautifully emotional human beings are. This emotion is taken to an extreme when in the end their passion brings them to destroy the one obvious representation of their past love, their baby.
When the couple first begins to fight over the baby the baby begins to cry. Naturally the mother tries to comfort him. This reaction can be found in almost every relationship between mother and child, and it is not only between humans. This basic maternal nature is common with many types on animals as well. When the mother of this story tried to soothe and even protect her baby from the father, it relates the reader to this strong feeling between mother and child.
The intenseness of this story brings about the beauty. It is in both the description of the setting and the portrayal of human emotions. Yet not only the emotions of the characters are beautiful, but also the feelings this piece provokes in the reader.
