act. The basis of which the Confederacy stands is not for anything good and has always been rooted in tyranny. The Confederacy was never meant to promote the well-being of all people. Rather, it was a system made to go against what had already been established in our country. The initial organization of the confederacy proved this based on its established definition.
             Throughout the years, the Confederacy has accomplished its initial purpose by rebelling against the majority, as seen in the civil war and the development of other organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan. The acts and attitudes of the Confederacy have continued into present times. This can be seen through acts of racism, lack of justice, and the constant promotion of the Confederate flag. This displays how the Confederacy has and still is living by its definition.
             With the controversy surrounding Dylan Roof and the removal of the Confederate flag, it is important to gain an understanding of the history surrounding it and how it came to be. The Confederate flag's design first came into play in 1861 upon the election of Confederacy president Jefferson Davis and Vice President Alexander Stephens. Their first order of business was to select a flag which best represented their new nation, so they summoned a committee simply for that purpose. Ironically, the committee selected for choosing the new flag would be headed over by a South Carolina congressman named William Porcher Miles. When choosing the flag, the committee separated the flag entrees into two groups. These two groups were the adaptations and complete departures.
             The people of the south wanted a flag that was similar to the United States, but with a unique identity of its own.
