Teaching the Ten Commandments in Public Schools

             Whether or not the Ten Commandments should be posted in public schools is not an argument about keeping God's word away from the children of public schools, nor turning our backs on God, but rather how and where the word of God should be presented and taught. The issue of posting the Ten Commandments in public facilities has been a heated debate for many years and will continue to be while our government and our people linger about on opposite sidelines--unable to reach a common ground.
             There are three critical issues continually disputed: constitutional aspects, moral aspects, and society's views. "Congress shall make no law representing an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." Ideal freedom of religion seems clearly stated, but simultaneously raises the question of true religious freedom. The Separation of Church and State principle is a part of our historical, legal and, political/social heritage and preserves and protects our religious liberty. There is a reason for the separation of church, and state-so the state does not control religion. The power of the United States rests in the hands of the government, as it was in England when the Puritans founded America because of religious persecution.
             The Founding Fathers wrote the constitution for the people; the constitution should be able to serve its sole purpose and protect the people. Having freedom of religion is one of the greatest aspects of this country. To have true freedom of religion gives us, the people, the right to believe and worship anything we please. Thus, to persecute an Atheist for his or her religion is against the constitutional right of every American.
