Mrs. Emily was a lonely person living as a misconception in the South. Many people thought she was living in luxury, when in reality she had be humanized. The people of the South had driven into insanity because they would not allow her to live a normal life. Her father had been controlling and would not allow any guy to get close to her. He put his family on such a high standard that she was isolated from society. When her father died she lived in denial of his death because she would truly be alone. Every thing she ever loved left her. She was also living in misconception about her own self, thinking that the town people still respected her, when in fact they thought she was insane. Although the most of the town people no longer respected her, she still got by purchasing arsenic and not explaining what she intended to use it. Her Grierson name is one reason the community holds her in such high regard. The town people believed that the Grierson family thought they were better than the society that she inhabits. The fact that Emily was tax exempt is an example of the authority she possesses over the townsfolk even though she is distant from them. She was secretive in that other people thought she had gotten married when she had only purchased her boyfriend nice gifts, as well as in the fact that no one had seen her home in over 40 years. Her voice was dry and cold and she did not accept no for an answer. Her house smelled of dust and abandonment.
             As evidenced in the death of Emily's father, Emily has a hard time coping with death. She was reluctant to give up the body of her father, so why would she want to be the cause of the death of Homer. Her refusal to accept the reality of his death is an example of Emily's fear of time passing. The decay in Homer's tomb symbolized the foolishness of Emily's refusal to move on.
