             It these days approaching the 21-century, it would be difficult for an individual to dispute the argument that social problems have reached an all time high. The number of offences being committed has been continuously rising over the past years. Indictable offences of which the most serious being murder seem to be more and more predominant in our society. Governments have tried countless means in an effort to reduce these problems, all of which have proven unsuccessful. This allows one to wonder if anything can possibly be done in an attempt to diminish the extent of this problem. I would propose the following: that the government abolishing legislation which currently outlaws the death penalty in favor of laws which bring back capital punishment. My opinion concurs with the belief that laws in the criminal code should attempt to serve two purposes. Firstly they should provide justice for the victim(s) and there families, and secondly they should serve as a means of deterrence. I will argue why laws permitting capital punishment help to achieve both of these objectives. I will finally contest some current issues opposing the death penalty in an effort to show that, when examined in totality, arguments favoring the death penalty supersede those, which do not.
             Fear of consequences is a common deterrent from wrongdoing. I as do, many people believe that the average murderer's reluctance to kill will increase greatly if the prospect of being killed himself exists. After all, the anxiety of spending a lifetime in prison may not be that strong, especially when one considers that all prisoner's are well fed, given a place to sleep and are given countless other privileges which include television, exercise machines and regular visits from friends and family. It is only relaying a message of "zero tolerance" to criminals that the high rate of violent crimes may begin to decline.
