Catcher in the Rye

             In Catcher in the Rye by Jerome David Salinger, Holden Caulfield suffers from an excess of sensibility and that means an excess of emotion that prevents him from functioning in the world properly. Holden puts his standards too high. So when Holden completes one of his everyday tasks, he gets very disappointed. Holden feels there is nothing to achieve in life.
             First of all, Holden hates the fact that his younger brother Allie had died of leukemia. Holden loved Allie so much. Holden would say in the novel that Allie was so intelligent. Holden loved Allie a great deal. Holden also has a younger sister named Phoebe, which he loves a lot because she reminds him of Allie. Holden wants to continue his life so that he can find his future and not search for the past.
             Second of all, Holden shows his excess of emotion when Stradlater went on a date with Jane Gallegher. Holden keeps bothering Stradlater about Jane. Holden would ask Stradlater to find out if Jane still keeps her kings lined up in the back row. Holden was asking these dumb questions for a reason. After Stradlater went on off to the date, Holden started thinking about Jane a lot. Even though Holden doesn't show it, Holden cares for Jane a lot and didn't want her to have done anything with Stradlater even though Stradlater was Holden's best friend.
             Lastly, Holden shows excess of sensibility in a weird way. Holden says that he wants to move away from "everyone." The reason Holden wants to move away from everyone because he's feeling stressed out or frustrated. For instance, Holden is taking it to hard on himself that his younger brother Allie died. It's very sad that a close relative died, but Holden shouldn't take it as it was his fault that Allie died.
