In The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne demonstrates perseverance as she maintains her normal lifestyle while she and her family fight for survival during the Second World War. As the Nazis are trying to take over Austria and the rest of the world, Auto Frank, Anne's father, arranges that they disappear and live in an unknown part of a building called the Secret Annex. Life in the Secret Annex is tough, but somehow Anne still manages to think of others and feel bad that she is more fortunate. Maintaining one's hopes and faith even when the odds are highly bleak is the theme of The Diary of Anne Frank.
             Anne, the one and only person in the Secret Annex who maintained hope the whole time listened to the complaints and worries of others, still looks at life optimistically while listening to remarks such as "'...If they should become ill, then we'll be completely isolated, and then if...'Enfin, I expect you know the rest, at least I presume you know the "Secret Annexer's" well enough by this time to be able to guess the trend of their conversation.", and "When St. Nicholas' Day approached, none of us could help thinking of prettily decorated basket we had last year. I felt a long time about it until I invented something, something funny. I consulted Pim, and a week ago, we started composing a poem for each person. Anne cheered up the entire Secret Annex with her fantastic sense of humor and optimistic looks on things even when inside she was crying, even when they were going through rough times, and even when she felt that there was no hope left for her.
             Anne feels sorry for those around her and wants to help them. She shows this many times, including when Anne and her sister were saying, "Suppose we were to take the children who are walking past, one by one, hoist them up with a fishing rod, give them a bath, wash and mend their clothes, and then let them go again."
