In this play you have to wonder why Othello doesn't just ask Desdemona if she is having an affair with Cassio. There are many reasons why? Maybe he doesn't think he will get a straight answer. Othello plays a very brave man that leads thousands in to battle. Therefore we think he should not doubt himself or his feelings. A lot of times strong men are very weak and have many flaws. They portray themselves as strong confident souls when actually they are weak and very much afraid. There could also be the fact that Iago is doing his mind games so sublimely that Othello is not sure what to think. Therefore being so unsure of his feelings and reality he doesn't want to look like a fool to his new bride. Othello has many environmental issues that keep him from expressing his true feelings. From such suppression he is allowing himself to be subject to Iago's mind games. His weakness for love shows in how he has to have such unnecessary displays affection with Desdemona. She on the other hand is so smitten with the fact that she is going against the grain and has married the Moor. That she is unable to see how truly weak Othello is. The only truly strong character is Cassio. He on the other hand has been set up to look as if he is weak. This is represented by his temptation of the wine when he had already had enough. We are to feel sorry for Othello in all of his inequities. When, Othello has aloud himself to be the pawn in Iago's chess game. That is the reason for the powerful symbolism of the chess pieces being knocked down at the begging of the move. So many people will fall for the way Othello strides around with that ridicules sword. This may have been what W. Shakespeare wanted I think he truly wanted his audience to see Othello as weak.
