The relationship between honor and goodness in Arthur

             King Arthur lives on into the modern world and beyond. Arthur embodied many qualities that were quintessential for being a king in the middle ages: chivalry, honor, valor, compassion and bravery. However, it is interesting to note that his utmost qualities also led to the downfall of his reign. Arthur's inspiration for Camelot was built in the name of honor, chivalry and loyalty. There Arthur set up his round table for the best knights who would take an oath to defend the right and seek out and defeat the wrong.
             Honor consistently appears as a benchmark quality in the Arthurian court. It was how men were to live one's life: with honor. Honor consisted of three rules: loyalty to your king, honoring one's "friends" and honoring the lady that you love. You would face the king's wrath if you were not to adhere to such regulations. It was apparent Arthur was trying to construct a society in which everyone was "virtuous". However, from another vantage point, Arthur's idea for a utopian society was going to fail with or without the help of Lancelot. Arthur did not see that there are problems with using logic alone to live one's life by. The biggest problem being that we, as human beings, are incapable of taking all variables into account. This means that we will make mistakes no matter how logically we live.
             With respect to "goodness", Arthur would interpret that as going hand in hand with honor. For Arthur, following orders was being "good"; thus, it required one to honor society's values. Since Arthur was King, he felt it necessary for everyone to obey and follow through with such orders. Goodness and honor are inter-related in such a utopian society: that without the other, the other cannot be.
