Thoreau Essay on Society

Sweat beads down your sun burnt forehead. The sight above is discouraging, an endless canvas of blue with no white blemishes in sight. The yellow ball of heat beats down with restless force, making every step seem like a giant leap. The sand engulfs every footstep, adding mass to an already infinite body of mass. No hope seams to be within reach of being sucked in and used to help keep up a will to live. No sign of progress is in sight. Or is there? An oasis appears suddenly on the horizon. All strength left internally is harvested and bundled in a matter of milliseconds then shipped off to the locomotive machines of the body. Every last dwindling hope is wrestled up to carry this walking corpse. The oasis draws closer; every step brings the beginning of the end of this horrifying journey. Almost all of the energy left inside of your almost lifeless body is draining quickly but the oasis is drawing even closer. Until suddenly it disappears, it was a mirage. All hope of living is gone, all hope of progress is gone, and all thoughts of life are gone.
This is a display of society in an individual form. A few similarities can be extracted from this. The main theme is when in a desperate situation all flickers of hope are aggressively pounced on. This theme can be applied to all of society. For example when in a time of need (usually war); all routes of escape from this tight situation can and usually are traveled without much thought. Such as the use of the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in order to end World War II. Millions of innocent people lost their lives, and for what? Although the action saved thousands, maybe a million, troops from being killed in an invasion of Japan; the dropping of the atom bomb was inhumane. No human being has the right to play god. No human has the right to juggle the life of millions in their hand. But it was a time of desperation, a time of need; so what was thought to be needed was done.
