These negotiations seemed to have few results as well and in 493 Theodoric was proclaimed King of Italy by his Goths. The reasons behind Anastasius refusal to grant Theodoric the recognition he sought had to do with the a disagreement between the Pope in Rome and the Eastern Ruler. When Theodoric refused to interfere the Emperor broke off all negotiations for the next two years.
